Gastric Bypass Diet
The first 2-3 days after your gastric bypass surgery, you will not be able to eat anything. This is called the liquid phase. After the surgery your body has to go through a healing and diet training process.
There are three phases:
- Liquid Phase
- Pureed Food Phase
- Soft Foods Phase
As you can tell this is a progression of foods starting at the ‘easy to digest’ end of the spectrum slowly moving into the ‘not so easy to digest’ end of the spectrum.
During this regime, you eat many small meals a day and sip lots of liquids throughout the day. The drinking and eating is best if it is not consumed during the same meal time. You need to spread these out.
Don’t forget that all liquids are not created equal. Especially avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks!!
Your bariatric surgeon should give you a list of foods you can eat. The best surgeons tell you that you can eat anything that you want; but they make sure to give you a list of all the things you are going to want:)
Good Luck with your surgery and take care of yourself!
